Outdoor Outreach: Reach the Peak Race Report

Posted by Toby Guillette Saturday, November 12, 2011

The San Diego non-profit, Outdoor Outreach, hosted their inaugural fundraising event at Black Mountain last weekend and raised $25,000!!!

This is a cause near and dear to my heart and I wanted to support their efforts, so I launched a fundraising campaign in the months prior and also participated in the trail running event they hosted on Saturday.

This event was much more than a race -- it was an opportunity to help spread the Outdoor Outreach message:

Outdoor Outreach's mission is to empower at-risk and underprivileged youth to make positive lasting changes in their lives through comprehensive outdoor programming. We use outdoor activities to provide youth with the support, resources and opportunities they need to become successful adults.

Thanks to the generous donations from 30 of my friends and family, I raised $1,300 which is just about enough for the organization to fund 3 local group trips for the youth they serve.

The race portion of the event consisted of multiple summit repeats in a 3-hour time period. The winner completes the most repeats in the least amount of time. The trail to the top was ~2mi. with ~900’ of elevation gain.

With rain the day before the event the trail was a muddy mess at the start on Saturday. Check out this video and listen for the mud as we run by:

I showed up with a gameplan to hold a consistent pace and knock out 4 summits. I executed my plan in 2hrs53min which was good for 2nd place overall:

I’ve learned many of life’s greatest lessons in nature’s classroom and hope that the ripple effect from this campaign will impact the lives of our youth in a positive and empowering way. It’s been a pleasure and honor to share this mission and collect donations from my friends, family and colleagues to support this organization. Thank you all for recognizing the importance of Outdoor Outreach.
