Memorial Day Weekend

Posted by Toby Guillette Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Happy Memorial Day weekend and unofficial start to summer! I hope your weekend was full of good times with friends and family, time outdoors, eating good food and drinking good beer. If not, you still have a few weeks to "officially" get your act together ;)

Memorial Day weekend view

On Thursday night, I made the trek to Boulder City, NV with Alicia and her parents. On Friday, we got breakfast in town and drove to the top of Bootleg Canyon to see all the MTB trails and do recon for our adventure the next day. Then we geared up at REI Henderson, picked up a grill a Dick's Sporting Goods and stocked up on groceries for the weekend.

On Saturday, we started our day at BC Flight Lines for an adrenaline-filled morning!

The flight line started atop the canyon at ~3,900 and consisted of four separate lines that made their way down to the base of the mountain.

What a unique and super-fun experience! If you aren't scared of stuff like this, def book a tour and do it. You will not regret it, seriously.

Later that day we watched an old school Hoover Dam video and then drove over to the Hoover Dam to check it out. What an incredible site! I was so glad I watched the full movie to learn about all that was involved in our country at the time it was built and how we continue to benefit from it today (especially in San Diego).

On Sunday, Alicia's dad took us out to Lake Mead on his boat -- my first time back to the lake since the Silverman 140.6 in 2008.

We cruised over to the Hoover Dam and got to see it from water level, then explored the narrows and found some quiet side canyons and beaches to enjoy. What a great day! It was 98-degree air and mid-60's in the water. :)

We also discovered Boulder Dam Brewery in town which was fun for a quick growler fill but is definitely in need of a lot more hops in their IPA.. just sayin!

On Monday, we stopped by the veteran's memorial to pay tribute before the drive back.

We got back to San Diego early enough to host Tim and Elizabeth for dinner. Tim, if you don't already know, is one of my best friends from high school, who I lived with in SD for 2 years, and now lives in Maui. He is moving back in August, to relocate with Elizabeth to Colorado. I'm so stoked for them! Check out Tim's photos.

So with this post I think my break from blogging could in fact be over… so stay tuned because next weekend is looking fun already!

  3. Were those sweet potatoe circles on the grill? Yum!

The flight line thing looked neat.
My parents were just out at Hoover Dam too. Looks like a great combo of fun & family!
