Spring Ahead

Here are some highlights from March thus far. Happy St. Patty's Day!

Gran Fondo San Diego was a wet and wild with chilly temps and lots of rain. I rode with a crew of seven from Active.com. Altogether, we experienced eight flat tires. It was a disappointing day as we had high hopes of enjoying the beautiful course, but all we could do was laugh at how things played out. Here's a little video I put together that illustrates the conditions:

As you know from my blog posts over the past month, I recently relocated to a new neighborhood in San Diego. From this location, I have trail access to Penasquitos Canyon which connects to my office. I'm really excited because this enables me to incorporate trail running and mountain biking (MTB) commutes into my training schedule, as well as road bike and run-commuting. Last week, I commuted via MTB and had a blast!

Last week, the IHRSA Trade Show came to the San Diego Convention Center and I was hired by TRX Suspension Training to be apart of their "Street Team.”. This basically meant getting paid to work out with the TRX in the sunny, 70-degree weather for a couple of hours -- not bad!

I got a pass to cruise around the convention after my shift was up and saw some pretty cool stuff, including the FreeMotion Everest Challenge, a treadmill competition where teams of five race to reach 29,029 feet in elevation gain first for a $10,000 prize.

I spoke with one of the contestants from the team that was in the lead. She said they ended up running about six miles each, but it was broken up into 32. intervals that added up just over an hour of running each and averaging 100 ft. of gain per minute (varying person to person since some were running on a steeper grade). Each team member from the winning team took home $2,000!

Immediately following the convention, I hit the road with friends and made it to Joshua Tree National Park for our bi-annual group camping and climbing trip just as the sun set. The weekend was a blast, as usual, with perfect weather all day Saturday. My friends and I scrambled, bouldered and got on a few top ropes, too. On Sunday, we hiked the highest peak in the park, Ryan Mountain, before heading back to San Diego. We're going to make a video from the trip so stay tuned!

This week, it’s training as usual minus the running. My knee started to act up on the hike. But when I say knee, I actually mean where the IT band connects to the knee. The knee issue is a result of my IT band being too tight. I have scheduled a couple massage and PT sessions to take rehab more seriously, but cross-training is going great. I hit 12.5 hours of training last week!

I'm excited to host my best friend, John, and his wife, Patty, for their visit to San Diego beginning this weekend. We've got some fun activities planned and I'll be taking a few days off of work to show them around. Glad the sun is out!

Happy St. Patty’s Day -- Be safe and enjoy!
