A Noble Canyon and A Noble Cause

Posted by Toby Guillette Friday, September 18, 2009

September is flying by as I’m getting race ready for another ultra marathon and raising funds for the non-profit, Outdoor Outreach.

Magestical
September is the month of sunsets in San Diego.

A week from Saturday, I’ll be running the Noble Canyon 50K with a goal of slashing my course PR of 5:49 down to the 5-hour mark. I first raced NC50K in 2007, its inaugural year. You can find my race report here. This year, I’ll toe the line with the intention of pushing myself towards a competitive finish against a full-field of 175 runners. View the course details here and beta here.

For training, I logged a 20-mile, 13-hour day above 10,000 feet and a 20-mile run with 4,700’ of climbing up and down Palomar Mountain. On the other end of the spectrum, I hit my high gear on Tuesday at the TCSD track workout with two rounds of 1600m, 800m, 400m, at a 5:45 average pace.

For cross-training, I’ve been bouldering at the indoor rock climbing gym and practicing yoga. For strength and conditioning, I’ve been training hard at the office with the ActiveX crew. Our group was just featured in the Union Tribune! Check out the article and video.

I’ve also been experimenting with my nutrition lately. I read Mark’s Daily Apple about living and eating “paleo” and my friend, Ryan Denner, began a blog post series that prompted my conscious effort to fuel my lifestyle more efficiently. The difference I’ve felt thus far is evidence enough to continue educating myself on the topic. I encourage you to continue investigating your own nutrition -- chances are we all have areas that can use improvement. I’m definitely excited to continue learning and feeling stronger and healthier along the way.

The 3rd Annual Outdoor Outreach Joshua Tree Experience Fundraiser is actually taking place during the same time as the NC50K, so I will be missing out on the fun climbing clinics and yoga classes. After the race, I plan to drive to the park and join the group for dinner and campfire festivities. It’s been a pleasure and honor to collect donations from my friends, family and colleagues to support this organization. Thank you all for recognizing the importance of outdoor education.

Yours in Adventure,
~Toby
